Memorial for Michele M. Allen (Class of 1983)

Dear Friends,

As many of you know, our friend and classmate Michele M. Allen (Class of 1983) passed away in February. In an effort to keep her memory alive at Andrews, Lisa Lynott Carroll and I have been working together to form a book memorial at the Andrews Osborne library in Michele's honor. This collection of books will celebrate Michele's life while a student at Andrews, her hobbies, passions and interests. Many of you know that Michele went on from Andrews to receive multiple degrees and had a deep love for books. She loved being a librarian and teacher. I would ask you to consider making a donation to this memorial. Let's keep Michele's memory alive at the school she loved.

Checks can be written and mailed to:
Andrews Osborne Academy
38588 Mentor Ave.
Willoughby, OH 44094
Attn: Marianne Jereb

*Please note on the memo of your check that funds are for the Michele M. Allen Library Memorial. Funds will be collected from now through August 1. A ceremony of dedication will take place at the library in the Fall. A date and time will later be announced.

Sincerely, Jan Mampel Colwill (Class of 1983)

A letter from Sharon Marsee Graper, Chair of GLOW

Dear Alumnae:

We hope you are planning on attending this years Parents Association benefit GLOW on Saturday, April 25th. I am this years chair and I think I am in a unique position to encourage you to attend to help us celebrate and support all that our school has to offer. My son Taz is a current first grader. More interesting to you though would be the fact that my father Charles Marsee was the Head of Andrews for 17 years starting in 1980 and my sister Linda Marsee Asher graduated in 1987. This school is a very large part of my families past and present.

This year GLOW will be held at the school and we will be honoring several students and current faculty. We will also be awarding the first ever GLOW Award. This award will be given at GLOW to past Andrews faculty member Rebecca Steinback. Rebecca taught at Andrews for 34 years. She was an understanding teacher, a friendly colleague and a respected administrator. Please come and help us celebrate her contributions to our school. It is individuals like her that make our school GLOW. My father will be attending as well to help us honor her.

You should have received an invitation in the mail. If you did not please let us know so that we can improve our database.  The event will take place on Saturday, April 25th. You can download the invitation, reply card and get raffle tickets for a trip to Crete by visiting the AOA website at www.andrewsosborne.org and going to the parents resource page. Please consider coming. The food will be great and the school will be GLOWing. If you have any questions about the evening please feel free to email me.

We are moving Alumnae-to-Alumnae communication to Facebook. There are currently hundreds of Andrews Alumnae on Facebook. This will not affect the website or the blog itself. ONLY the e-mail Directory on the left side-bar will be going away. You will still be getting your e-mail newsletter from us.

The Andrews Alumnae Association has an "Official" group on Facebook. Click here to join. So tell your Classmates to sign up for Facebook! It's FREE too!

DSCN0185

The 2009 Distinguished Alumane of the Year Winner is Hildegard Ulman Lund from the class of 1925. Her birthday is Dec. 26, 1906.

Hildegard just turned 102 !!!

She was married to Jeffery Lund, an executive with East Ohio Gas. He died at a young age.

Hildegard was a business major and worked for GMAC as an accountant. She was a charter member of the Priscilla Club. This was an alumnae club that started in the 30's. Priscilla was the name chosen by the club for the girl at the spinning wheel that use to be the Andrews Symbol. Hildegard served as President of the Alumnae Association in the 40's. She gave generously of her time and money to the school and continued to serve on various committees.

She was also a life member of the Fairmont Presbyterian Church in Shaker Heights where she gave many hours of service and headed up many committees for her church. She was given an award for 50 years of service by Norman Vincent Peal for her generous contributions to the Guidepost Foundation. Her only living relative is a stepsister, who is in her late 80's and resides in a Pennsylvania nursing home.

Stacy Steinnberg, Ronnie Wilson and Barbara Whidden visited Hildegard in her home last month. We told her she would be honored at the Founders Day Banquet as our oldest living alumnae and her name added to the list of distinguished alums. She was very pleased. She has fond memories of her days in Willoughby. She said over and over what a wonderful school Andrews was.

Celebrate 100 Years of Traditions

The AOA community is getting ready to celebrate 100 years of tradition with the Centennial Celebration of The Andrews School. What better time to share your memories. We are collecting from Alumnae their stories, traditions and unforgettable moments in written and/or video format to compile into a book and/or compact disc. Telling your story is easy: In written form, please submit your entry to: The Andrews Alumnae Association, P.O. Box 443, Willoughby, Ohio 44096-0443 or bring with you when you attend the Founders’ Day Banquet. If you wish to tell your story in person, videotaping may take place at Andrews Osborne Academy during the Founders' Day weekend, please let us know when you send in your RSVP by placing a check ( √ ) on the remittance. We can then let you know the times that will be available. It is important that you give us your e-mail address or phone number so we can contact you when we have more information.

Dear Alum: We are trying to become more cost efficient and green. As many of you know the cost of printing and postage has been steadily rising. For years we’ve been able to cover the cost of mailings with the money we collect from dues but that’s changed in recent years. Now the cost of doing business far exceeds the amount of money we bring in with dues. So we are asking Alumnae to help us in two ways:

Paying your dues.
Dues are only $15 per year and we have no intention of raising this amount. We rely on dues not only for mailings but also for events. You can pay your dues on the website: http://www.andrewsalumnaeassoc.com/Donations.html or by mailing a check to: Andrews Alumnae Association P.O. Box 443 Willoughby , OH 44096-0443

Opting out of mailings. We know that a lot of the Alums prefer to get their information online and that’s wonderful. All graduating classes from 1990 to present will be receiving all Alumnae information off our web site unless they have stated before or now that they would like to receive future hard copies of mailings. We have an interactive website that is constantly updated with news and events. You can visit us at http://www.andrewsalumnaeassoc.com. Here you can also pay your dues, and subscribe to our blog, which includes an e-mail directory, class notes and upcoming events.

A letter from Charles J. Roman, Head of School...

Dear Andrews Osborne Academy Family,

As we ring in the New Year, we would like to take time to honor our past as well as look forward to our future. On November 23, 2008 the Andrews Osborne Academy (AOA) family suffered a devastating loss of one of its esteemed alumni. Miss Melanie Williams, Class of 2007, passed away in a tragic car crash. Melanie was a sophomore at George Mason University where she was studying to be a pediatrician. Miss Williams is also the daughter of an alumna, Alana Smith White, Class of 1981.

Melanie was a lot of things to a lot of people: she was a loving daughter, a devoted sister, an honest and true friend, a serious and dedicated student and leader, and a stellar athlete—just to name a few. She was a delight to be around and a friend to all; it was rare to see Melanie without a smile on her face. At AOA, Melanie holds multiple school records for the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team; she holds the records for scoring, rebounding, and assists. Her jersey was retired upon the close of her senior season.

Through a generous donation, a scholarship fund has begun at AOA in Melanie’s name. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a returning student athlete on the girls’ basketball team who demonstrates leadership and a passion for excellence both in the classroom and on the court. Athletes who apply for this scholarship will be evaluated by a committee and the recipient will be recognized at the annual awards assembly held near the close of each school year.

Also in her honor, a Melanie William’s Memorial Basketball Game is being held on January 26, 2009 at AOA. This game will be played against Wickliffe High School. The coaches from both teams coached Melanie at AOA and developed close relationships with this extraordinary athlete; they invite you to attend this tribute. The JV game will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the Varsity game to follow. A memorial ceremony will be held between games. There is no admission fee but a “donation” of any amount would be accepted at the door. All proceeds collected will go directly to the Melanie William’s Scholarship Fund. Please join us in honoring the life of Melanie Williams and help us to build her legacy for the future by donating to the Melanie William’s Scholarship Fund.

If you are unable to attend this event, but wish to make a donation please make your checks payable to: Melanie William’s Scholarship Fund, AOA and mail to: AOA, 38588 Mentor Avenue, Willoughby, OH 44094. Every dollar collected will go directly to her scholarship fund and will allow her spirit to live on.

Sincerely,
Charles J. Roman Head of School
