Well this is ironic. On the heels of my "Owen Wilson Dissed My Bronco" post about the media using tag lines to draw attention I get slammed in the face by this very tactic from my local newspaper.
This morning I went outside and picked up my copy of our local hometown rag. After opening the plastic baggy and removing the paper I was smacked in the face with a nifty sticker of a scantily clad woman saying "Made You Look" (see photo to left). Hello! Are they kidding? This is a small suburban family paper who usually reports on the conservative side. Now I am in no way a prude but I certainly know that there is a time and place for this type of advertising ploy. If this ad had run in the personals section, fine. If it was in Sports Illustrated, fine. But on the front page of our local paper right next to the headline "Remembering A Hero" for a local slain Soldier is completely offensive and tasteless.
Now at first I thought maybe it was a 3rd party advertiser that got "accidentally" misplaced so I did a little investigating. I called the phone number (which I so kindly blocked out) and found out that Mark is in fact the Advertising Director of this fine newspaper, and I use that term loosely. Well Mark congratulations. You got my attention and I did look. What I saw was a cheap media ploy, and I mean cheap. Shame on you Mark for initiating this campaign and shame on the editor for letting you get away with it. Well the people of this community are not stupid and this little stunt will backfire as I am sure that I am not the only person that was offended.
As a courtesy I am e-mailing this blog entry to both Mark and the editor of this paper. I can only hope that it does not fall on deaf ears. I expect an apology to the community and the family of the soldier whose face appeared next to this sticker. Unbelievable that these people even have jobs. I seriously considered canceling my subscription but then who would guard the hen house? The Rooster?
