Fixed Up My Flower Beds!

Before_2

After_2

I just thought that I would share my before and after pics of my newly fixed up flowers beds. Every year I try and tame this jungle in the Spring but this year turned out really well.

I added some Marigolds, Petunia's, a Poppy, some Black Eyed Susan's and a few more Perennials this year. My Peonies that I planted two years ago are doing really good this year too.

As an added touch I bought these Cedar barriers to make it look really pretty. The rocks are from our beach. My husband and lugged about 10 buckets of them up 3 years ago. I love how they give it a rustic look.

So despite the fact that I kneeled on a rock and screwed up my knee I am extremely happy with the results!

Yardwork Is For The Birds & Other Small Animals...

YardLiterally! I just cleaned up 10 bags of leaves and nuts left by the birds and squirrels over the winter. We have some sort of nut tree in our yard that small animals like to destroy and consume. We had piles and piles and piles of mutilated nuts that needed cleaned up. Whoo! Hoo! What a way to spend a Sunday!

We used to live in the city and had a cute little English garden that just needed weeded once in a while. Now we live near a nature preserve and I feel like I live in Jurassic Park! We have large cranes, owls, deer, snakes and other small critters. Granted I love animals and nature but I would prefer that they left my yard alone! I think that we are going to have to spend the rest of May trying to get caught up! Ahhh...my life is so exciting!

I Got A Nephrolepis exaltata!

Dsci0787Otherwise know as a Boston Fern! Actually I got 2 of them from the Evil Sam's Club yesterday. Yes I am now regularly shopping at Sam's Club again. They beat me down but as a plus the Fern's only cost $9.99 each so I think I'm on the winning end this time!

My Fern's are residing my the computer room this week because the evening temperatures here in Cleveland are below 50 degrees and the little tag says that I'm "NEVER supposed to let them get exposed to temps under 50"!

Now I just have to learn a little bit more about their care so I don't have 2 dead Nephrolepis exaltata!

History Is Cool

Cs1_3

This is the corner stone of the Margaret St. John Building of The Andrews Osborne Academy. The building was dedicated in 1922.

I'm a 1988 graduate of the school and on the Alumnae Board and I just complied an Online History of Andrews Osborne and a family tree of the founder Margaret St. John Andrews with Squidoo.

It's kind of neat to see all this history. The school was founded in 1910 after Margaret St. John and her husband Wallace C. Andrews, a Standard Oil businessman, were killed in a NYC fire. Mrs. Andrews grew up here in Willoughby, OH and wanted to form a  school to educate young women.

Squidoo is an awesome place to preserve history. Why not create an online history of your high school or college?

I'm a Complete Moron!

A few weeks ago I had a really bad customer service experience at our local Sam's Club and vowed never to step foot in the door again. Well today I needed 36 rolls or toilet paper, a giant box of Cherrio's and a gallon of grape juice so my husband I headed to BJ's only to find the place was being evacuated by firefighters.

We didn't stick around too long but were now in a quandary about where to get our bulk booty. So... against my better judgment we went to Sam's Club. We did fine, no hassles this time but I did feel like a trader for going back.

Now I am sure I'll end up using Sam's Club again which brings me to the conclusion that even poor customer service will not keep customers away if they need something bad enough. In this case I wanted the TP more then my pride...I'm a complete moron!

You Killed Kenny...

PcWell maybe not... apparently Kenny is alive and well and thriving as a piece of popcorn on ebay. I am embarrassed to say that my cousin is trying to sell this piece of popcorn as a South Park Kenny look-alike on ebay. HELLO! Now I'm really questioning my gene pool. Aside from the fact that she took a really crappy photo, this tasty snack looks nothing like Kenny.

One of my major pet peeves (and fascinations about human nature) is people selling food that looks like religious icons and TV characters. A pretzel that looks like the Virgin Mary, potato chips that resemble states, grilled cheese with the holy spirit...these things are popping up on ebay all the time. Now I'm not sure who's stupider, the people selling or the people buying. I say if you are dumb enough to pay thousands of dollars for a turnip that look like Elvis's ear then you deserve to be labeled an idiot in the public eye. Of course my suspicion is that these people are just looking for their 15 minutes of fame. Be careful what you wish for...do you really want to be known as the nut who paid $11,000 for a head of broccoli that looks like George Clooney? Think about it!

When Customer Service Goes Bad!

I was at our local Sam's Club today and had the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Now I have been a member of Sam's Club for years and am a loyal customer. The greeter knows me when I walk in the door. Well today being Good Friday I expected the store to be busy. Sam's also must have thought that it would be busy to because they moved all their Easter Cakes and flowers to the front of the store.

Well I got what I needed, a chocolate cake, diapers, bananas etc. and proceeded to the check-out. I kid you not there were 5 out of 15 lanes open and the lines had about 10 customers each in them. So I stopped a manager and asked if they were opening any more lines. Answer: Not right now, we don't have anyone here. OK. Now I see 3 managers running around trying to find people to work the registers. So I say in a loud voice, "This is completely unacceptable, why are more lines not open?", of course I was ignored. My question then is why can't a manager work the register? I guess they were too busy delegating.

Wait it gets worse. Sam's Club for some reason instead of opening more check-out lines likes to have people "pre-scan" your cart so that all you have to do is give the cashier a slip of paper when you check-out. Wouldn't it be easier to just have these people working a check-out? Having customers see long lines is poor service. What's worse is that the lady who pre-scanned me had a bad scanner and the order didn't take so I had to check out again!

Yes, it's a full moon. My story gets even worse. One of my purchases was a AT & T Go Phone. I am so careful these days about pricing because it's so easy to get ripped off when an item is not tagged. I picked up a Go Phone that was sitting directly under a sign that said $18.95. OK, the phone is $18.95. WRONG! It rings up as $56.00. At this point I'm just mad. I've got my mom and my toddler with me and my toddler is screaming because it's 100 degrees in there so I say just cancel the order!

Ha! You can't cancel the phone because it's already been activated. So previous rude manager comes over and I tell her that the phone is $18.95. She asks me to prove it. So I leave my poor mother with my crying child so that I can show the manager (her name tag say 18 years of service) where I got the phone. Sure enough there is a big sign next to it that says $18.95. Now this is funny...confused manager then points to the Go Phone literature flyer and says, "That's what's $18.95" HELLO! What the heck is she talking about. I kindly tell her no, that the flyer is not $18.95. Finally she get down on her knees and finds the only other phone on the rack that looks a little different and declares, "This is the $18.95 phone"! Now why didn't I think to get on my knees and find the correct phone?

At this point she hands the phone to the cashier and says this is the right one. I still want to leave but they are really pushing this phone and I am too tired to fight. Besides my other purchases are in limbo because they haven't canceled the $56.00 phone off my order. Apparently you have to activate these phones when you check out. Well no one including the manager can seem to figure out how to deactivate this phone. Finally she just voids the order and that works. After re-entering  all my purchases they get to the $18.95 Go Phone and they can't activate it. I keep saying, "No that's OK, I don't want it. Finally I convince her to give up and free me. At this point I'm really mad. She can see that my child is crying and that I want to leave. She does offer a half-hearted, "Sorry this never happened before speech" to which I reply that I hate Sam's Club and never want to return here again. I also state that this is inexcusable. She shrugs and says sorry again.

So I leave without my Go Phone, a big headache, and a crying child. This is what I call really bad customer service. If big corporations are going to expect us to shop at their stores they need to train their employees better. This manager with 18 years of service should have 1) Staffed the store for Good Friday, 2) Known how to activate/deactivate a phone, or been able to call someone who did know and 3) know that the customer is always right. I should have gotten a free bag of candy, a coupon book, a plant...something for my terrible experience. Now I am going to take my business to BJ's even though I have a Sam's Club card until November. What's even sadder is that they don't even care that they lost a customer!

Another Cleveland City School Debacle

I cannot believe that the Cleveland City Schools expected students to walk to classes in the over one foot of snow we got over the weekend. Here's the report on NewsNet5.To make matters even worse the parking lots were not plowed for the teachers. Apparently several teachers got stuck in the snow or gave up and went home.

This is inexcusable. If Cleveland couldn't plow they should have canceled school. To have small children climbing over snow drifts and slipping on unplowed streets in horrible. Chalk another one up to the incompetence of both the city and the school board. Here's a great quote:

"The district said one of the reasons school wasn't canceled is high-schoolers are taking their graduation exams this week."

Yeah well it's kind of hard to take exams when your teacher never made it to class because of no parking! So Mayor Jackson what do you say to this?

Stick Your Kids in the Sun With A Glass Of Milk!

We've been told for years now that the milk is bad and that the sun is even worse. Well now it seems that we were wrong. Apparently kids are now getting rickets and bone softening because they spend too much time inside sitting in front of a computer drinking vegan smoothies. According to this article on Yahoo! we need to get back to Got Milk! in a hurry or Boniva is going to be the drug of choise for teens. Hey I just got the Boniva thing. Boniva...Bovine...Cow...Interesting!

Go Whoopi!

I am sitting here watching "The View" and I am really liking Whoopi Goldberg at the moment. I was a Rosie fan so I was not too accepting of her replacement right off the bat. Despite that fact that I really liked Whoopi as an actress an comedian I wasn't sure I liked her as a host. Well those days are over. I throughly enjoyed that stand that she took towards Elisabeth Hasselbeck (I really dislike her attitude, her views and her shoes) yesterday and I loved her commentary today...so Go Whoopi!
