Can the music business be saved?

From Cowabunga!

Head Squid sethgodin asks a really interesting question, Can the music business be saved? Now some people might be saying, "I didn't even know it needed saving" Well the answer to that question is yes, especially if we are talking about the 1970's & 80's music business model. Here's why...

Growing up in Cleveland, OH in the late 70's, early 80's meant that your ear was tuned to 100.7 WMMS and your ass was hanging out at Record Den deciding if you should buy Genesis, Journey or Rush on vinyl. "Tom Sawyer" was on the radio the entire summer of 1981 and that's what you listened to. You saw Rush in concert, you bought a T-shirt...life was good. No iPod, no downloads, no pirating just good music...Right?

Wrong...I hate to burst anyones bubble but music pirating is not new, the medium has just changed. Bootlegged copies of music ran rampant in the 1970's they were just a little harder to create. Today Bootleggers are just average Joe's sharing music. It's the same thing.

So where does that leave the music industry? Trying to stop digital duplication is like trying to stop water leaking from the Hoover Dam with chewing gum. It ain't gonna happen. The music industry is in transition right now...so take a look at Seth Godin's debate to see what creative, insightful and just down right brilliant ideas he's got to take the music business into the 21st Century...and no it does not involve bringing back vinyl...Damn!

Cowabunga!

Btn_heyI love to debate so I figured what better way to start some tongues wagging then a blog. However the problem with a blog is that people can only leave a comment and the debate gets a little convoluted because you can't tell who's on what side. Solution? Hey MonkeyBrain!

Hey MonkeyBrain! was created by the fabulous people at Squidoo to provide a really awesome place to debate. The interface allows you to start a duel with both sides of the argument running neck-and-neck. As if that wasn't cool enough you can also create a "Links List Plexo" to support or disprove your claim and have people add new links to the list!

But wait there's more...I feel like Bob Barker. Hey MonkeyBrain! also allows you to add YouTube Videos, Flickr Photos, Polls, Sell Products (you get cash or you can donate to charity), other Squidoo lenses...the possibilities are endless.

Integrating Hey MonkeyBrain! with your blog is like adding hot fudge to your vanilla ice cream. It's making something great even greater. It's exhilarating...Cowabunga!

So enjoy these Hey MonkeyBrain! debates...I love a good argument. Let me know what you think then go create your own!

The Economic Stimulus Package, Horse Dookie or Happy Days?

The check is in the mail...well almost. George Dubbya signed legislation on Wednesday Feb. 13th for Americans to get a check of up to $600 for individuals and $1,200 for couples, with an additional $300 for each child provided they meet certain criteria.

The idea is that people are going to be running down Main Street with their greenback booty in hand buying HD TV's, Pink Flamingo's, $1 Beers. The plan is that "We the people" are going to spend that $150 Billion Dollars and whip the economy back into shape.

Now the problem here is that we are going to have to borrow this money in order to fund the rebates. HELLO! What if the average middle class American decided to borrow $50,000 from their credit card and gave 16,667 people $3 each to buy Girl Scout Cookies. Yes it's a good cause, yes the Girl Scouts would benefit, but average middle class American would be so far in debt that they would probably end up filing bankruptcy. Generous, Yes...Stupid, Yes.

Now don't get me wrong...our garage door just self-destructed last night and the $1,200 that my husband I will get will certainly go to good use, BUT I can't help feeling that it's somehow going to bite us in the ass next year. The government is being vague about how this is going to impact our 2008 tax returns and there is no guarantee that this plan will in fact save the failing economy. So it's a tough call, but I am going to call it Horse Dookie.

There are better ways to stimulate the economy. Lower gas prices, stop reckless government spending, create jobs, lower tuition costs...Click Here to join the debate!
