This is a perfect bag for Labor Day!
This is a perfect bag for Labor Day!
I think that it is only appropriate to pay tribute to Princess Diana on the 10th Anniversary of her death. Diana was a true princess who shone a bright light on the sometimes dark and dreary British Royals. She was charitable, graceful and a great mother. A person who deserves recognition and remembrance.
Well this is ironic. On the heels of my "Owen Wilson Dissed My Bronco" post about the media using tag lines to draw attention I get slammed in the face by this very tactic from my local newspaper.
This morning I went outside and picked up my copy of our local hometown rag. After opening the plastic baggy and removing the paper I was smacked in the face with a nifty sticker of a scantily clad woman saying "Made You Look" (see photo to left). Hello! Are they kidding? This is a small suburban family paper who usually reports on the conservative side. Now I am in no way a prude but I certainly know that there is a time and place for this type of advertising ploy. If this ad had run in the personals section, fine. If it was in Sports Illustrated, fine. But on the front page of our local paper right next to the headline "Remembering A Hero" for a local slain Soldier is completely offensive and tasteless.
Now at first I thought maybe it was a 3rd party advertiser that got "accidentally" misplaced so I did a little investigating. I called the phone number (which I so kindly blocked out) and found out that Mark is in fact the Advertising Director of this fine newspaper, and I use that term loosely. Well Mark congratulations. You got my attention and I did look. What I saw was a cheap media ploy, and I mean cheap. Shame on you Mark for initiating this campaign and shame on the editor for letting you get away with it. Well the people of this community are not stupid and this little stunt will backfire as I am sure that I am not the only person that was offended.
As a courtesy I am e-mailing this blog entry to both Mark and the editor of this paper. I can only hope that it does not fall on deaf ears. I expect an apology to the community and the family of the soldier whose face appeared next to this sticker. Unbelievable that these people even have jobs. I seriously considered canceling my subscription but then who would guard the hen house? The Rooster?
This really cool mouse pad from Gingerbloke is perfect for your favorite musician!
My husband came home yesterday and said that Owen Wilson dissed his Bronco. Apparently Wilson said that it was old, smelled bad and that the 1978 Ford Bronco sucked. The incident happened at our local Auto Zone. Well at least I think that the guy's name was Owen Wilson. As my husband tells the story there were 2 guys in a Corvette parked next to him and one of them yelled out the window that he hated the old Ford Bronco. His buddy then said, "Hey Owen, take it easy on the guy, at least the thing is running". Owen then said, "shut up Wilson" and they drove away. Hence the opening statement "Owen Wilson Dissed My Bronco".
Now that I heard the story I was wishing that I has spent the last five minutes vacuuming as the story was kind of boring. However I got lured in by the tag line. Now despite the fact that I know that Owen Wilson was recently in the news for having attempted suicide and was most likely still in the hospital the story peeked my interest. Perhaps Owen Wilson was really in Ohio, fully recovered and relaxing at the local Auto Zone (hey it could happen). Or maybe the suicide attempt was a farce. Maybe Owen Wilson really needed a vacation and just used the suicide attempt as his get-away story. Or maybe...OK, enough of the or maybes.
The bottom line is that I was lured by the sensation (or in this case my husband's stupid story). I wanted to believe that Owen Wilson really was at the local Auto Zone so I listened. I wanted to be part of the media sensation. I wanted to be part of a news worthy story. Why did you read this entry? Was it because you liked the Ford Bronco? Or was it because you saw the name Owen Wilson and wanted more? I'll bet it was the latter. Now I am not trying to downplay the seriousness of when happened to Mr. Wilson, I'm just trying to make a point. Have we become so desperate in our society for celebrity news that we'll jump on any morsel like a rabid monkey? I hope not, but I am afraid that I'm right.
In today's society of instant news we know immediately when Britney sneezes or when Lindsay farts or when Owen Wilson tries to commit suicide. On behalf of Owen Wilson it might be better if we didn't know what happened. If we believed that he backed out of his latest movie deal because he was in Ohio at the local Auto Zone dissing a Ford Bronco and not locked up in the hospital under observation. Sometimes fanstasy is better then reality.

I am very excited about a new feature that is being offered by the amazing people at Squdioo. They have recently launched SquidWho a super cool sister site to the wildly popular Squidoo. SquidWho is similar to Wikipedia in that you can search for famous people. Now here's the cool part. Unlike Wikipedia YOU can create your own SquidWho. Yes YOU! Are you a fan of David Hyde Pierce like me? Create a SquidWho. Like Madonna, Bill Gates or Paris Hilton? Create your own SquidWho fan page. SquidWho will help you set up the site with neat modules and a fun template. Now for the best part. You can make money off of your SquidWho for yourself or your favorite charity. So what are you waiting for. Go make a SquidWho!
